Tonight at the opening of the Amsterdam Dance Event the new number one of the DJ Mag Top 100 was announced. The 20-year old Martijn Garritsen, better known as Martin Garrix, has won making him the youngest number 1 DJ of the world ever!
Last year the Belgian duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike won the award but the title is now – luckily – back in the Netherlands.
Back in 2004 Martijn saw Tiësto perform at the Olympics in Athens and from that moment on he knew he wanted to become a DJ and producer. He started at the Herman Brood Academie in Utrecht, a populair school which has brought forth many successful musicians.
In 2012 Martijn release the record ‘BFAM’ together with Julian Jordan, he became SLAM!FM Talent of the Year, was featured on Christina Aguilera’s album and was signed by Spinnin’ Records. A year later Martijn worked together with Sidney Samson on the record ‘Torrent’, which was released on Tiësto’s recordlabel.
After that his big break came along with the record ‘Animals’. The record became a monster hit all across Europe and made Marijn, 17 at the time, the youngest person ever with a number one record on Beatport.
DJ Hardwell, who has won the Best DJ award twice in a row, already mentioned Martin Garrix to have a good shot at winning. He told RTL: ‘If I had to give my title to anyone, it’d be Martin Garrix.’.
